The Flash! – June 12, 2014
This week we welcome to the Flash Beth Undercuffler, who is Hanover’s liaison with the 9th Ward Interfaith Coalition in our partnership with Family Promise as we together offer a home to families for four one week periods this year.
Hanover successfully shared in another great week hosting the Family Promise families at Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church in April. There were four families with a total of 14 people, many of whom were very hungry teenagers, so the delicious dinners prepared and served by our volunteers were very much appreciated.
Our next hosting week of July 6 – 13 is quickly approaching. Early indications are the new group of families have young children between the ages of 2 and 8 years old. Because the children are out of school for the summer, we are planning some fun activities together like visiting Brandywine Zoo and the Children’s Museum.
Some samples of volunteer opportunities are preparing meals, joining the families for dinner and a few hours of visiting with conversation, fun activities like board games, gym time, sing-alongs, or reading to the younger kids. Also needed are van drivers to bring them back and forth from the Day Center, and over night hosts. Volunteers can speak to Beth Undercuffler to sign up.
Also, Carolyn Gordon, the Executive Director of Family Promise, will be our guest preacher at Hanover on July 13. She will be available after worship to meet with anyone who would like to find out more about Family Promise and the volunteer opportunities.
Thank you to all the Hanover members who have volunteered so far this year and I look forward to working with you again in July.
